"The blond swirls ruined as they stuck to my eyes and the cut across my cheek, cemented to my skin with blood." And I Exhale, by Stephanie Pitcher Fishman.
"Marguerite, only rags, some stained a deep umber like the crust of a pie long since forgotten in a hot oven, stared back." Shaded, Dede Nesbitt.
Shutter Step takes me back to a time when a short story from Roald Dahl or Shirley Jackson was just what I needed to transport me to another time and place. This collaboration of authors offers multitudes of fantastic imagery. In short stories, every single word needs to count to pull the reader in.
I highly recommend this anthology of shorts. The stories are refreshing and absorbing giving the reader just enough.

Mobster’s Bones by Amy Rachiele
(Book 5 in Mobster Series or a stand alone)
“Then let me explain something to you.” He puts his arm around my shoulder like a very bad scene from the Godfather. “You are friends with them. In turn that makes you friends with me… and Antonio is marrying Megan, your friend. Antonio is going to be the Boss. We treat friends like family. That means you are friends with, and practically family with, all of us.”

I was sucked in immediately!
Kristen Ashley has done it again!
The Unfinished Hero Series is my favorite of all of her series. There is just something captivating about these dark heroes. I loved the mystery that surrounded Deacon and his devotion to Cassie. The time jumps caught me off guard, but they did not break me out of the story. I recommend Deacon and the entire Unfinished Heroes series if you enjoy reading about a dark, mysterious, alpha-male.
